Using the Nik Selective Tool in Photoshop with Nik Collection 4 for Wildlife Images
I just bought Affinity Photo 2 and I hear Nik Collections are a great addon to get but the ones using it use Photoshop. How does this video compare in installing it now, as opposed to 4 years ago and is there any issues of NC's not working in AP2 since there have been a lot of changes in the past 4 years?? Thanks
excellent lesson on editing thanks
Thank you both for this COMPELLING, IR story. The two of you make an excellent presentation team, if I may say. I found the images with the models, to be very very engaging - really making me hunt for the story, making me very inquisitive about all the qualities of the picture. ‘Haunting’ I think is the word… All in all, a fantastic video, with OUTSTANDING software - which I would love to get my hands on. I have liked and subscribed. This evening, I have the time for a 1 hour viewing, which is unusual. May I suggest chopping it into 4-5 shorter videos that are easy to find together? More power to the whole team. I’ll be back, for more highly motivating content. 🌹 🌹
so, this post is only 9mo old. Id like to buy VER.6 but DXO says I cannot. Are there any avenues to acquire/buy a VER'6 serial number? TY
If only I could purchase just Silver Efex alone. Everything else in the collection is just clutter to me.
I'm sorry to hear your opinion about the other plugins in the Nik Collection. It certainly depends on your preferred photography style.
Well, I only want & need Silver Efex 🤷🏼♂️
Unfortunately, this is not currently possible.
I use Nik primarily from Photolab. When I use it with PhotoShop Elements, layers tiffs must be 8-bit.
How about in Windows?
Thanks for your comment! Do you have problems installing NIK on your Windows PC? Have a look here: support.dxo.com/hc
I tried to upgrade to Nik Collection 7 from Nik Collection 5 and was told that I have to pay full price. When I reached out to the DxO representative, I was told that they could be charging me "$79 for upgrade from v5 to v6 and $89 from v6 to v7, so, instead of charging you individually to upgrade we charge the $159 new price" . Isn't that like saying if I upgrade from iPhone 13 to iPhone 15, Apple should charge me for Apple 14 as well. Too frequent upgrades with minor changes and I have to pay full price for each upgrade. No, Thank you.
After checking with DxO customer support, I confirm that the upgrade to version 7 of the Nik Collection from either version 5 or version 6 is at the same price. To take advantage of this, simply log in to your customer account. Feel free to contact customer support for assistance: support.dxo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

OMG what a bore.
I’m somewhat skeptical about the nearly $90 cost for upgrading from version 6 to version 7. It doesn’t quite seem justified to me.
Thanks for your comment! If you are unsure, what tools/features are important in your workflow? Maybe I can help you out with this! :) Best regards
@@NikCollectionByDxO Hello. Thank you for your response. I appreciate it. I understand the need for pricing adjustments, but honestly, $90 (almost $100) seems steep *considering 80% of your Nick Collection is already available* . I can understand spending $60 to $65 for those who already own version 6, especially considering inflation. I recognize that your company needs to make a profit, but in my opinion, paying $90 for an update that only offers a 20% to 30% improvement and some new fonctions seems a bit steep. The full version is priced at $159, yet the update costs nearly $100, specifically $90. It seems like a significant amount for an update. Did I miss something here? Hmm ... anyway, that was my point. Now, thank you for your question. My favorite tool is the Viveza tool, which I frequently use for my workflow. But I’m having trouble with the local adjustment feature, specifically the control point. The sliders are quite small, which makes them difficult to use. I have to be careful to click and drag the slider correctly. I believe a round shape would be more user-friendly than the current small almost flat gray line used for the slider button. *Given the increasing size and resolution of our monitors, using this shape and relatively small slider can be challenging and not so intuitive* . As a result, I often resort to using the panel sliders, even though I don’t particularly enjoy it. I would much rather use the tool’s slider. I hope the DxO team will consider this feedback in a future update! Again, thank you for your question. Have a fantastic week. Best regards.
@@NikCollectionByDxO Should I express gratitude for the removal of both my response to your message and my question? …
there is perspective effects like in 6? or it is necessary to buy view point at 100 euro?
Just keep 6 installed; you still have the license
Exactly! :)
It's really not worth it... not many changes but you want $90 just for the upgrade... it's starting to get ridiculous... almost no changes, but another version, more fees... It's definitely better to buy LR+PS for 12.3 Euro/month than your add-on for $160 nad 90$ upgrade every year !!!!! This is just an add-on, and it costs more than LR+PS, which offer much more. LR+PS works great, thousands of free settings, everything can be done almost equally quickly, without constant switching. This is my last year with your software, it's a waste of money.
Thanks for your comment! If you use Version 6 and you still like it, that's perfectly fine! :) If you like to upgrade, without paying a monthly fee, you will get an upgrade for just an upgrade fee, which is fair! If you like to work with other tools or NIk is not important in your workflow, you can give it a try with our free version! :) best regards
Im still using Nik collection 3, however I don't qualify for an UPGRADE, too expensive to pay full price all over again.
Thanks for your comment! Since NIK3 was quite some time ago, sadly we can not grant you the upgrade price. But you can try the free version and see if you like the upgrades and decide then! :) Best regards
Don't worry, you're missing nothing
Purchase Nik 6 less than 60 days ago and just assumed they would provide updates to Nik 7 , boy was I wrong . Reached out to DXO and was told I had to pay for the update , ZERO consideration was given at all . As a long time user of their products this will be the end of the road for me . IMHO this is simply a money grab by DXO , so much for customer retention
Would be nice to have nik collection as a 'layer' or 'smart object' within DxO Photolab as well. I often don't use Nik because of the cumbersome workflow from within Photolab: export as dng (takes time) -> Nik app -> apply changes -> new file in Photolab and you have to do the whole process again if you want to do changes to the original raw file.
Please add a shortcut to toggle the mask view of each control point.
Thank yoy !
Be warned that this “upgrade” does not include Nik Perspective. If I had known this before purchasing I never would have bought the “upgrade.” What a rip-off!!!
If you've got Photolab AND Viewpoint though, what then is the point of Nik Perspective, considering it is an exact duplicate? If you don't though, I'm pretty sure you can do most of those things that Perspective did in those programs. Or if you still have Nik Collection 6, use that for Perspective considering you can have 6 and 7 running side by side. Can't have everything.
So many other fabulous features - worth every penny!
@@alanberkson7809 True that. I wish that Adobe did what DxO did and bring out the colour wheel that allows you to precisely target a specific colour with an eyedropper and adjust the HSL of it, like what DxO did. That feature alone is well worth paying for. As well as other aspects, especially when it comes to editing JPEG or TIFF images. The ONLY downside of DxO is that it is not compatible with ALL RAW formats even though it says it does. For example, for smartphone shooters, except for iPhones it will NOT accept DNG files from Samsung smartphones like I do.

On Robin Whalley's review video on his UA-cam channel he said you could install Version 7 and keep your previous version which means you can keep Nik Perspective. Haven't tried it myself yet though.

It's totally true.
Thanks for your comment! We have a tool called ViewPoint which has all the features plus many more to edit like you could with perspective. Also, this is just for the newer versions, you can still use perspective. Best regards

If you "upgraded" as you said you did, you still have version 6. You can run both installations at the same time and therefore you still have access to Nik Perspective. A bit of a workaround, but at least you still have it.

$89 for the upgrade without Perspective, this doesn't look, good bye Nik Collection, at least they should give a discount on View Point.
Earlier we could group control points. Can't seem to find it in Nik Collection 7
Make sure that none of the local adjustment tools button is active in the panel. In the image, click close to the control point, control line, control polygon or luminosity mask dot that you will be using as the main setting and then, holding the left mouse button, drag a rectangle to encompass all the other dots you want to link (the rectangle will have white edges and a white translucent fill). Release the mouse button: all included tools are linked and active (and yellow): only the sliders of the control point or the control line where you started to draw the selection rectangle are visible, these sliders will affect all the tools in the same way, the size of the area of influence remains independent and changeable, from one tool to another, the tools dots keep their appearance. Another way to link multiple local adjustment tools is to hold the Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl key (PC) and click on the dots. To cancel the linkage and regain the dependency of each control point and/or control line, click anywhere in the image. The linking technique can also be used to remove several local adjustment dots at once (press the Back or Delete key).
Anything new specifically to Dfine, Sharpener or Silver Efex vs how they work in Collection 5 or 6?
Probably not.
hahahaha, you must be kidding
Anything new or improved in Dfine, Sharpener or Silver Efex vs collection 5 or 6? Thanks.
Or even "Workflows." 😉
Where is Perspective ?
They removed it from this “upgrade.” However, they are willing to sell you a separate module that does the same thing. Can you say “rip off”?
The voice resembles Robin Whaley.
Robin Whalley. There was an HSL filter in Version 6 which did nearly everything this "extended" one does. One of the first problems I had when opening V.7 was that it had removed this from one of my presets and it took me a while to find and reinstate it.
Lovely video - thank you DXO!
Thank you! 🫶
2022 upgrade to version 5 > 79.- EUR 2023 upgrade to version 6 > 79.- EUR 2024 upgrade to version 7 > 89.- EUR = 247 EUR in less than two years! 2025... you can't get enough of it, it's slowly enough! 😡
If you are fine with an older version you do not have to upgrade. If you like the newest version, you can purchase at a lower upgrade price since we do not have a subsctiption plan, which is cheaper in the end. Best regards
I've really enjoyed using Nik Filters since the beginning and wouldn't want to be without it. I even understand if I only use three of this entire package (Color Efex, Viveza, Sharpener) intensively and have to buy the remaining packages without using them. For this reason alone, the cost-benefit ratio is unfavorable for me, especially for my area of application. I like the new features of Version7, I've always been waiting for this and that's why I'm going to upgrade. I think it's excessive and unjustified to spend so much money again in such a short time just because the user interface and the respective filter packages can be combined and thus stay up to date. I would like to see fair pricing for long-standing, loyal customers who can confidently recommend your product to people who are not in a very good financial position

Such a breath of fresh air, Robin, to have you doing these videos rather than than that babbling idiot, PJ, who did them previously.
Are you guys ever going to develop an iOS version?
The best version yet, and a lot of great improvements!
Thank you! 🫶
Good lord, this is ten times easier in PS, itself. Use the AI selection tool on the turban. Then create an HSL layer and boom same result..only quicker in PS.
Not all of us use photoshop
You should. It's a great program.

When you overlap the control points are you multiplying the effect in these areas?
wow those Pictures are terrible... too much structure, on the Picture with the tree you can see how its Just too much structure because of the white Border around it....and srsly, you can't mess up Pictures with NIK normaly, but this is the proof you can....sry for such a negative post but I really had to say after reading all those "positive" comments. damn
Clear, to the point, no fluff. Great presentation.
Too much waffle, could have got this done in 30 minutes or less.
my version of the software looks wholly different than yours (as tends to happen) Couldn't read your sliders at all looked like blurry Hebrew or something, I did pick up the broad strokes thanks
it would be nice if you could mask the setting
Presenters need to watch Apple presentations. Instead of telling what it will do, show what it does to get results it can deliver.
Have you ever shot film? Red filters darken the sky not a blue filter, the filter blocks the color and lets through the rest you can take a red rose on a green background and make it a white rose on a dark background to a black rose on a light background
As a new user, you are trying to show too much at one time…….take an image and edit it……for me, it’s very boring and NOT at all informative……👎🏻👎🏻
what would make more sense is to integrate and maybe charge more for photolab but have the nik suite within photolab? and U point is being rendered old hat now LR has such an amazing selection and masking toolset. If Photolab had the masking and selection of LR and integrated Nik plugins/collection then that would be the complete darkroom. A side note, now 4k screens are the norm the interface of for instance silver effx the tools on the right can be a little fiddly to use in a fine movement manner, and the U point with its pill and slider controls are awful to use on 4k screens making them pointless now the sliders are mimicked on the right but still they need to have the option to grow like we can with LR.
